About
Club History
It all started off in 1980 when two founder members decided to experiment with
RC model helicopters. This did not turn out to be an easy task, as very little
help was available, not even from existing clubs.
As more and more people become curious and interested in flying model aircrafts,
an association was set up. This first task for the association was finding
available space for flying. With Malta being a small island, this also proved
difficult. During the 2nd world war the RAF used part of Hal Far as an airport.
What remains from the airstrip seemed an ideal site since this was remote from
clubs and buildings that could impede take-offs, landing and flying . So that
is where it started and is still today the meeting place for model aircraft
flying enthusiasts.
In 1990 the association was named Hal Far Model Flying Association ( H.F.M.F.A).
Today the association comprises more than 74 members and still growing.
In 2002 the association had the honor to raise an Endurance Flight from Gozo to
Malta, with a Piper J-3 Cub. The flight was routed from Nadur to the east court
of Malta on to Birzebbuga, and finally landing at Hal Far Flying Site. The
flight proved to be a success.
